Tool - Music Speed Changer for Chrome

The Chrome Web browser is BY FAR the most music friendly browser out there. It’s why MusicFIrst and many other companies that create cloud-based software strongly recommend the Chrome browser when using their products. The reason is that Web Audio API and Web MIDI API run natively in Chrome - nerd speak for they really work well :)

You may not know that there are quite a few music related extensions for the Chrome browser that take full advantage of these APIs. One of my favorites is an extension called Music Speed Changer.

If you visit the Chrome Web Store and search for music, you’ll find the Music Speed Changer for free. All you need to do is click on the Add to Chrome button on the right hand side of the screen. So what does this extension do? Basically exactly what it says.

  • When you land on any website that has audio to play back, including YouTube, Spotify, TikTok, or any streaming service you can:

    • Change the tempo without changing the pitch

    • Transpose pitch without changing the tempo

    • Adjust the tuning with changing tempo.

    • Change both tempo and pitch

    • Loop sections of audio

Music Speed Changer also has an app available on all mobile devices. The app allows you to SAVE any of the audio in the new pitch/tempo you create. The Chrome web extension for desktop computers does not.

Music Speed Changer is an incredibly powerful tool for teaching. Your students can slow down any section of a song they’d like. This could help tremendously with learning a melodic run, improvised solo, or tricky rhythm. Transposing songs down or up a few steps makes for an individualized performance experience, especially when you accompaniment tracks or karaoke style audio. It’s also a perfect tool for teachers for creating accompaniment tracks for their students.

Check out Music Speed Changer and all of the other free music extensions in the Chrome Web Store. Very simple tools, for free, to make the music listening and making experience even better on the web.
