Have you heard of Chat GPT? You will soon!

My colleague at work told me about Chat GPT the other day and I have been OBSESSED with it ever since. This could be one of the most disruptive technologies in a LONG time and has some very serious implications for education. Have I grabbed your interest? Read on.

Chat GPT uses artificial intelligence to create written text. It is completely free (at the moment). After you sign up for an account, you simply set Chat GPT on a task and it does it. What follow is what Chat GPT created when I asked it to “write me a blog post about how Chat GPT could be used in the music classroom.”

Chat GPT, or Generative Pre-trained Transformer, is a natural language processing model that has the ability to generate text based on a given prompt. It has a wide range of potential applications, including in the music classroom. Here are a few ways that Chat GPT could be used in the music classroom to enhance teaching and learning:

  1. Songwriting assistance: Chat GPT could be used to help students brainstorm and generate lyrics for their own songs. By providing a prompt about the theme or emotion they want to convey, Chat GPT could generate a list of potential lines or phrases for students to use as inspiration.

  2. Practice assistance: Chat GPT could be used to help students practice and improve their performance skills. For example, students could input the song they are working on and receive feedback and suggestions for improvement from Chat GPT, such as phrasing, dynamics, and tempo.

  3. Music theory assistance: Chat GPT could be used to help students understand and apply music theory concepts. For example, students could input a chord progression or melody and receive an analysis of the harmonic structure and potential melodies that could be used over it.

  4. Collaboration: Chat GPT could be used to facilitate collaboration between students. For example, students could input their own contributions to a song and receive suggestions for how to build on and develop those ideas from Chat GPT.

Overall, Chat GPT has the potential to be a valuable tool in the music classroom, providing students with personalized feedback and assistance as they learn and grow as musicians. It could be used in a variety of ways to enhance teaching and learning, and could potentially help students develop their creativity and musical skills in new and innovative ways.

Pretty damn scary, huh? Not only is the text completely convincing, but it’s good. It’s almost as if a music educator took the time to think up those 4 ideas. It took Chat GPT about 30 seconds to write that. It NEVER repeats itself. When I asked it to do the same thing again, I got a completely different manuscript, though some of the concepts were the same.

Can you imagine your students finding this technology and having Chat GPT write their assignments for them? Don’t worry - they already are. And you can’t trace it for plagiarism.

Ask Chap GPT to write you a holiday song about your boss. Here is what it came up with:

Verse 1: It's the holiday season And we're feeling the cheer But there's one person who stands out He's the one we hold dear

Chorus: My boss, my boss He's the best in the biz He works hard all year round But now it's time to unwind

Verse 2: He's always there to guide us Through the highs and the lows He leads with compassion And never lets us go

Chorus: My boss, my boss He's the best in the biz He works hard all year round But now it's time to unwind

Bridge: So let's raise a glass to him And all that he does He's the reason we're successful And full of holiday buzz

Chorus: My boss, my boss He's the best in the biz He works hard all year round But now it's time to unwind

Outro: Happy holidays to my boss We appreciate all you do We're lucky to have you leading us And here's to a fantastic new year, too!

Chat GPT can literally write you anything you want. The more directions you give it, the better it gets. You can include how many words you’d like it to write. It can write a script for you. It can write a 500-word essay.

Chat GPT answers a question about Mozart

I am equally amazed and frightened by how far AI has come. Chat GPT is SCARY good. You would swear that someone at a desk somewhere is writing it, but it’s just code and it gets better with every request. After it writes something for you it asks for a simple thumbs up or thumbs down. Once you rate it, it asks for more feedback on what it could improve on. Chat GPT is still in beta and version 4 is on the way and the word is that it is even better. There is a LOT of buzz about this new technology and I am pretty sure that a year or two from now, it will become as ubiquitous as other technologies.

Buckle up. Things are going to get very interesting!
